  • Local Academy product Michael Barrueta starts 2H in goal for CFC
  • Norwegian striker Markus Naglestad scores two goals and one assist

Wednesday’s rain gave way to a beautiful night of soccer at Finley Stadium. And it was raining goals as CFC and Appalachian State combined for five balls into the net.

Early in the match CFC applied pressure to Appalachian FC with several long goal attempts but none on target. It would be Appalachian FC with the first goal in the 20’ from a corner kick. They team from Boone, NC would add another six minutes later. This one was produced by a free kick.

CFC decided to pick up the pace and just five minutes later Markus Naglestad sent the ball flying into the right corner of the goal, producing hope for a CFC win.

Several substitutions were made by CFC to start the second half. Michael Barrueta went into goal for Alec Reddington. Nick Spielman, Cameron Woodfin, and Tate Robertson subbed in for Ricardo Bahena, Juan Hernandez, and Cutler Coleman.

After several attempts to tie up the match it was Naglestad again with a dash of brilliance into the left side of the net for the 2-2 standoff at the 51’ minute.

The roar from the crowd could be heard from outside the stadium. Naglestad was not finished. In the 58’ he assisted Felipe Oliveira, who scored the game winner against the Sasquatch. Plenty of attempts to regain the lead came from Appalachian FC but Barrueta and the defensive players made sure of a second half shutout.

After the match, Head Coach Peter Fuller said he was pleased with the finish following a disappointing start.

“It was great to be back in Finley, among our great supporters,” Fuller said. “We got some good performances in the second half from several players. One player in particular, Marcus Naglestad, was excellent scoring two goals and continued to cause problems for their defense all night long.”
