“I love Chattanooga. It’s my home. And now I’m an owner of Chattanooga Football Club.”
Thelma Collier is a humble yet proud woman. She has every right to be. The south Chattanooga native is also the mother of the late, great Reggie White; Super Bowl MVP and NFL Hall of Fame Defensive End. Her wall is decorated with jerseys and pictures of her son in action: First at Howard High School, then the University of Tennessee, and then the USFL and NFL: Memphis Showboats, Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Carolina Panthers.
“He was a man of faith, and he loved football. That was Reggie.”
The star studded product of Chattanooga’s southside grew up in St. Elmo and would have been proud to see his name on the street that borders the west side of Finley stadium, less than a mile from where he was raised. Reggie White Boulevard came into being four years after White passed. But Thelma and her family were there.
Thelma visits the street bearing her son’s name as often as she can. Now, she has even more reason to visit, as Thelma Collier is an owner of Chattanooga Football Club. Thelma is one of the 2,800 (and counting) owners of Chattanooga FC thanks to the new supporter ownership campaign launched in mid January and has raised just over $800,000.
“I think it’s a great idea, and a good way to show support for the city. One of Reggie’s teams, the Green Bay Packers, did something similar a long time ago. It’s a special thing you all are doing. I definitely want to come to some games, once it gets warmer.”
