As we march to kickoff of the home opener on March 26, we will use 10 Questions to introduce you to the players on the 2022 Men’s team roster. Look for a different player featured each day — plus a couple days where will feature more than one. Our next feature is Franky Martinez, a defender who was the captain for Stumptown AC last year.
1: Did you ever have another dream career besides soccer?
A: My dream since I was about 8 years old was to become a professional athlete.
2: How do you decompress after a long week of training?
A: Depending on my schedule it can vary. Usually I decompress with video games or by having myself a beach/pool day. I also enjoy making music.
3: What was the most nervous you’ve ever been?
A: Being in a cable car more than 1,000 ft up in the air to see the statue of Christ on Mt. Concovado in Brazil.
4: What are your preferred pre-game, locker room and post-game routines?
Some of my preferred routines include a big big breakfast on game day. Right before I cook I take my dog on a long walk and juggle with him. After breakfast I am either watching sports highlights all day (typically basketball & soccer) or napping until it’s time to get ready.
5: What’s the most memorable sports moment you’ve had as a fan?
A: Training session with the Argentinian national team and meeting Messi.
6: What sporting event have you always wanted to go to and why?
A: I’ve always wanted to go to a World Cup because as a soccer player there is no greater stage or higher level of competition. The atmosphere is probably my biggest reason why.
7: What’s your go-to meal the night before a match?
A: Chicken parm
8. You haven't been in Chattanooga for very long yet... have you found any interesting spots or restaurants you enjoy?
A: I enjoy the food at Maya Kitchen. An interesting spot that I like is Ruby Falls on Lookout Mountain.
9: What do you believe is the greatest challenge most athletes are facing today?
A: The biggest challenge athletes face nowadays in my opinion would probably be dealing with mental health. Although there is now more attention to this, it is still prevalent. Whether it be dealing with injuries, separating the game and your personal life, or even relationships with the people you work with, etc. It is a daily challenge. Building that mental fortitude to consistently bring in a positive and persevering way of thinking can be difficult for anyone but to do so when you’re dealing with your own inner battles mentally can be that much more difficult.
10: Who inspired you as a young athlete? Why?
A: Kobe Bryant because of Mamba Mentality. He inspired me to strive for constant improvement. Watching him taught me how to compete with myself to try to be the best me possible. Also my parents, because of all their sacrifices leading up to this point in time. The motivation to succeed was seeing how much work they put in to even allow me the opportunity to play this game and become a professional athlete.
